Al-Hashr · Madani · ayah 12 of 24

Al-Hashr 59:12

“If they are expelled, they will not leave with them, and if they are fought, they will not aid them. And [even] if they should aid them, they will surely turn their backs; then [thereafter] they will not be aided.”

Essence

Even the one scenario where the hypocrites finally showed up ends the same way: backs turned, and no one left to help them either.

A reflection

A promise unravelled one clause at a time

This ayah answers 59:11 clause for clause, and dismantles each one in the same order it was made. They said: if you are expelled, we will leave with you. This ayah replies: if they are expelled, they will not leave with them. They said: if you are fought, we will support you. This ayah replies: if they are fought, they will not support them.

The structure is almost forensic. Nothing is left standing of the original promise by vague suspicion alone; each clause is named and specifically contradicted. This is not a general accusation of untrustworthiness. It is a precise, point-by-point correction of an exact statement that had been made, as though laid side by side for comparison.

Then comes the clause that makes the correction complete. There was one scenario the first two denials had not yet covered: that the hypocrites might actually show up to help after all. The ayah adds a third collapse even here. If they do help, they will turn and flee, and then receive no help themselves. Every possible version of the promise, including the most generous reading of it, ends in the identical place.

This precision is itself a kind of mercy, strange as that sounds in a passage about betrayal. The Naḍīr were not simply told their allies had failed them in some general sense. They were not left to wonder which part of the promise had broken down. They were shown exactly which clause gave way at exactly which point, a full account rather than a vague verdict.
