Al-Hashr 59:11

“Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers [i.e., associates] who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allāh testifies that they are liars.”

Essence

Every promise the hypocrites made to Banū al-Naḍīr was spoken with a hidden back door already dug, long before anyone needed to use it.

A reflection

Watched, even behind the closed door

Two people once whisper a private arrangement in an empty car park, certain that no camera and no witness could possibly be present. They are wrong about the emptiness far more often than they realise, and in this case they were wrong absolutely. The hypocrites' promise to the Naḍīr was made quietly, between allies, with every reasonable expectation of privacy.

Yashhadu, the lexicons explain, describes standing there, seeing something with your own eyes, and then saying so: presence, knowledge and declaration in one single word. God does not merely suspect the hypocrites were lying. He testifies to it the way a witness testifies in court, as someone who was actually there when the private words were spoken.

There is a real arrogance in assuming any conversation is ever truly unwitnessed. The hypocrites planned this alliance as though only one audience mattered. The Naḍīr, who would be reassured, and the believers, who would not overhear. They never accounted for the audience always present regardless. It sat in every closed room and every whispered arrangement, long before any human witness arrived or was avoided.

There is mercy folded into this fact, not only exposure. A believer who has made an honest mistake in private, confessed to no one, is not actually alone with it either. The same witness who caught the hypocrites' lie catches a sincere regret just as clearly, and responds to each very differently.

A man rehearses an apology to a friend he has wronged, word for word, in the shower. He is certain no one else will ever know what he actually did. The privacy he assumes while rehearsing is real enough in one sense. No human ear is present. The same certainty that no one is watching can cut two ways: toward concealment, or toward honesty. This ayah quietly insists the better of the two was always the only real option.
