Al-Hashr 59:8

“For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allāh and [His] approval and supporting [the cause of] Allāh and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.”

Essence

Their truthfulness was not a claim they made, but a quality their loss of everything simply proved.

A reflection

Truth that does not snap under strain

A spear shaft is tested by bending it hard across a knee. Cheap wood snaps. Good wood only flexes and holds, proving itself exactly at the point where it might have broken instead. The lexicons picture ṣidq this way: something hard, sound and straight through, that does not give way when it is put to the test.

Al-ṣādiqūn, those are the truthful, is the ayah's final word on the Muhājirūn. It arrives only after everything else has been listed: homes abandoned, wealth left behind, a search for God's favour rather than any worldly gain. The truthfulness is not a separate claim added at the end. It is the verdict the preceding loss has already delivered. Their word had been tested exactly where fine words usually break, against real and total cost, and it had held.

This changes what 'truthful' means here. It does not describe people who were careful never to lie. It describes people whose claimed devotion finally met the one test that shows a claim either hollow or sound. Does it survive the full price of itself? Most claims of sincerity are never actually bent that hard. These were, and the ayah simply reports what the bending showed.

This is worth sitting with longer than the comfort of the word allows at first. A claim untested is not yet known to be false. It is simply unproven either way, resting on the word of the one making it and nothing firmer than that.
