Al-An'am 6:66
وَكَذَّبَ بِهِۦ قَوْمُكَ وَهُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ ۚ قُل لَّسْتُ عَلَيْكُم بِوَكِيلٍ
“But your people have denied it while it is the truth. Say, "I am not over you a manager [i.e., authority]."”
Saheeh International
Essence
His own people denied it while it stayed the truth, and the Prophet was told to say plainly that he was not their keeper.
A reflection
The cracks did not attend the vote
A structural engineer inspects a multi-storey car park owned by a residents' company. She finds deep cracks in two support beams and writes a clear report. Repairs will be expensive. At the annual meeting the residents debate it for an hour. Then they vote, by a large majority, to 'monitor the situation'. The cracks do not attend the meeting. They go on widening at exactly the same rate.
The ayah has the same structure. 'Your people denied it, and it is the truth.' In Arabic the second clause is circumstantial: they denied it while it was the truth. The denial happens. The truth remains. One does not touch the other.
The word for truth is al-ḥaqq. The lexicons describe the root as what is firm, established and holds, the opposite of what is empty and vanishes. One lexicon traces it to soundness, so that a tightly woven cloth was called muḥaqqaq. A thing ḥaqqa when it came true and became binding. That picture is established, and it matters here. Truth, in this word, is not an opinion. It is what holds weight whether or not anyone leans on it.
One commentary glosses it as the truth beyond which there is no truth. Another says it was true in everything it spoke of. A third reading takes it as the punishment just described, which must come.
Modern speech often talks of 'my truth' and 'your truth', as though truth were personal property. That is fair for feelings. Feelings belong to the one who feels them. But this ayah speaks of something else: a reality outside us that does not bend to a vote.
That is sobering and freeing at once. It is sobering, because our denial changes nothing about what is real. It is freeing, because the truth does not need our approval to survive. The believer's task is to align with it, not to win a majority for it.
