As-Saf 61:4
“Indeed, Allāh loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.”
Saheeh International
Essence
What Allah loves here is not fighting itself, but an unbroken line of people who stay exactly where they said they would stand.
A reflection
One line, no one ahead, no one behind
Ṣaff is the lexicons' word for things standing level beside each other, with nobody ahead and nobody behind. A she-camel being milked set her forelegs evenly, side by side; the lexicons call that stance ṣaff too. A generous host filling a row of bowls at a single milking was said to pour them ṣaffan, in a level line. Flat, bare land with nothing rising above anything else is ṣafṣaf, as if the whole landscape had been laid along one line.
The image underneath the word, before it ever touches a battlefield, is of evenness: no single point further forward, claiming more ground or more glory, than any other. Applied to people, it describes a formation where individual standing is deliberately surrendered to a shared line. A soldier who steps even slightly ahead of the row he is standing in has broken the ṣaff, whatever his personal courage, because the row was never about any one person's position.
That is worth sitting with on its own, apart from anything military. A ṣaff is the opposite of a hierarchy built on who is furthest forward. It is a structure in which the forward-most person has agreed to be exactly level with everyone else, and the value of the whole formation depends entirely on that agreement holding, person by person, all the way along the row.
