Al-Munafiqun 63:11

وَلَن يُؤَخِّرَ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِذَا جَآءَ أَجَلُهَا ۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

“But never will Allāh delay a soul when its time has come. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.”

Essence

The plea from the previous ayah is answered here, flatly and finally, in the very next breath, with the same word that framed the asking.

A reflection

The answer arrives in the very next breath

The previous ayah ends mid-sentence, in effect, with a dying man's unfinished plea hanging in the air: rabbi law-lā akhkhartanī, my Lord, if only You would delay me. This ayah answers before the reader has even had a chance to feel the plea settle: wa-lan yuʾakhkhira llāhu nafsan idhā jāʾa ajaluhā, and Allah will never delay a soul when its appointed time has come. The same root, ʾ-kh-r, used in the very same breath to ask and to refuse, with no distance at all allowed to open up between the request and its answer.

This placement is doing real work rather than simply following a scene with a moral. A reader who has just felt the pull of the dying man's plea, who has perhaps imagined their own version of it, is handed the answer before any hope of a different outcome has a chance to form. There is no gap in which to imagine the plea might, this one time, succeed. The ayah closes the door in the same grammatical motion the previous ayah used to open it.

This is not cruelty in the structure. It is honesty placed exactly where honesty is needed most, immediately after the scene most likely to produce false hope rather than real urgency. A plea answered a chapter later might have let the reader's hope sit undisturbed a while longer. Answered in the very next ayah, it does the only thing actually useful: it turns a moving scene into an active deadline.
