An-Nisa 4:18
“But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, "Indeed, I have repented now," or of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The door that stood open all life long cannot be reached for once death has arrived; the time to turn is before 'now'.
A reflection
Who owns your timetable?
A man of thirty-four, over coffee, says it with a smile. I will get serious about religion later. Once the business is sold, once the children are older. Fifty, maybe.
He has not said anything wicked. He has simply assumed something. He assumes the clock is his.
This ayah quietly removes that assumption. It describes people who keep doing wrong 'until, when death comes to one of them', they say: I repent now. The plan had a date in it. Death did not consult the plan.
Then the ayah changes voice. 'For those, We have prepared.' The plural of majesty: the King speaking. The root of 'prepared' pictured gear set aside for a campaign, and a bride's chest packed in advance. What is described was made ready long before the man made his schedule.
The Quran says it plainly elsewhere. Allah will never delay a soul once its term has come (63:11). Another passage pictures the dying asking: my Lord, delay me a little, so I can give in charity (63:10).
This is where pride has to bow. Not the loud pride that mocks religion. The quiet pride that treats time as a possession. Every 'later' is a claim that the next decade belongs to us. The ayah answers that it never did.
Does Allah need to warn us like this? He needs nothing from anyone (35:15). A warning given early is a mercy, not a threat. It is the gift of being told, while the clock is still running, that it is not ours.
