Al-Qalam 68:52

وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

“But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.”

Essence

Call it madness if you like — what it actually is, is a reminder meant for everyone.

A reflection

The answer to the very last accusation

This surah closes exactly where its hardest accusation against the Prophet ﷺ was just made. The ayah before this one recorded Quraysh's hostile stares and their verdict: innahu la-majnūn, he is certainly mad (68:51). This ayah answers that verdict directly, without raising its voice: wa mā huwa illā dhikrun li-l-ʿālamīn, and it is nothing but a reminder for all the worlds.

A closing argument in a trial does not waste its last word rebutting every objection raised along the way. It answers the one that actually matters. Here, the one that matters is the accusation of madness itself, and the answer is not a defence of the Prophet's ﷺ sanity point by point. It is a simple redirection to what the message actually is: not the ravings the accusation implied, but a reminder — something sober, ordered, and meant for every mind capable of receiving it, jinn and humankind alike.

The same declaration, almost word for word, closes another surah entirely (81:27), where it answers a different question: whether the Quran's source could be trusted. Here it answers a different one still: whether its bringer could be trusted to be in his right mind. One claim, doing different work depending on what it is placed beside. For the fuller treatment of what dhikr itself means — reminder, remembrance, renown, and the thread tied round the finger so a need is not forgotten — that other entry is where the fuller word study belongs.
