Al-Haqqah 69:12

لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَتَعِيَهَآ أُذُنٌ وَٰعِيَةٌ

“That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Four destroyed peoples and one rescued ark were narrated for exactly one purpose: so that something in you would actually hold on to it.

A reflection

A thread tied round the finger

Before phones kept lists, people used a simple trick against forgetting: tie a thread around a finger before leaving the house, so that every time the hand moves and the thread tugs slightly, the errand it was meant to recall comes back to mind. The lexicons record this exact habit as the picture behind tadhkira, a reminder: something deliberately placed where it will keep nudging a person back to what they already knew but were at risk of losing.

That is precisely what this ayah says the whole preceding account was for. Not simply information about the past, filed away like any other historical fact, but tadhkiratan, a thread tied around the mind, designed to tug at it later, at the exact moments it would otherwise drift. Thamud's blast, Aad's wind, Pharaoh's empire, the overturned cities, Nuh's flood: five separate stories, each placed in the memory the way a thread is placed on a finger, precisely so they would keep returning rather than being heard once and left to fade.

That purpose changes what kind of reading this whole passage asks for. A news report is consumed once and set aside. A reminder is meant to be revisited, returned to, allowed to interrupt an ordinary day the way a thread round a finger interrupts an ordinary task. The entire historical section just finished was never meant to end at the final word of ayah eleven. It was built to keep tugging, long after the reading itself was over.

A reader who closes this passage and genuinely forgets it by evening has not finished reading it in the way this ayah intends. They have simply let the thread fall off their finger before it ever had the chance to tug.
