Al-Qamar 54:15

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

“And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The ark was left like a marker on the road, and the surah asks for the first time: will anyone take it to heart?

A reflection

Left in the open on purpose

In more than one European city, a church bombed during the war still stands in the centre with its roof gone and its windows empty. The city could have cleared the site or rebuilt it. Instead it was deliberately left as it was. Shoppers walk past it every day. It does not need a sign to explain itself.

The verb in this ayah is taraknā: We left. The first hearers had a striking picture for the root. An ostrich's egg lying bare in the open desert was called a tarīka. The bird has walked away from it and will not come back. The same word named a meadow people pass over without grazing. One lexicon says the heart of the root is letting a thing go, and another adds that leaving may be chosen or forced. These pictures are established.

So the ark was not merely kept. It was left, set down in the open where anyone passing would see it. A classical theologian adds a subtle point. Here the verb means "made it into" a sign, because a thing you have finished making is a thing you leave. He contrasts this with another surah that says "We made it a sign" (29:15). "Left" carries the sense of a work completed and then set out to be seen.

That is how signs work. Allah does not hide them in locked rooms for the specially initiated. He leaves them in the open desert, on the main road, in the middle of town. The question is never whether the sign is visible. It is whether we stop.

The bombed church is passed by thousands every day who do not look up. The ostrich's egg lies in the open, and most travellers ride past it.

Look around your own life for things left in the open on purpose. A recovery you did not expect. A narrow escape. A ruin of someone else's choices. They were left there for you. Stop at one this week, and ask what it is saying.
