إِنِّى ظَنَنتُ أَنِّى مُلَـٰقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ
“Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."”
Saheeh International
Essence
The joy in the previous ayah was never luck arriving unexpectedly; it was a lifelong expectation finally, calmly, confirmed.
A reflection
The reason comes after the celebration
A person who wins a long-shot bet and a person who receives an expected salary both feel genuine pleasure, but the shape of that pleasure is completely different. One is startled relief, delight at an outcome that could easily have gone the other way. The other is the quiet satisfaction of something anticipated finally, simply, arriving on schedule.
This ayah supplies the reason for ayah nineteen's eager celebration, and the reason is entirely the second kind. Innī ẓanantu annī mulāqin ḥisābiyah: indeed, I was certain I would meet my account. The person calling strangers over to read their record was not surprised by a result they had never seriously expected. They are describing, after the fact, a conviction they held the entire time, now simply proven correct rather than overturned.
That ordering matters more than it first appears. Ayah nineteen shows the celebration; this ayah shows what was underneath it the whole time, placed deliberately after the joy rather than before it, the way a person often explains their own calm only once someone asks them why they are not more shaken by something that would unsettle anyone else. The explanation was always there. It simply had to wait its turn to be given.
A reader who has only seen ayah nineteen's eagerness might reasonably wonder what could produce a reaction like that. This ayah answers plainly: not a lucky outcome, but a life already built, in advance, around exactly this expectation. The celebration was never the main event. It was the predictable result of a conviction held steadily, long before there was anything yet to celebrate.
