Fussilat 41:23
“And that was your assumption which you assumed about your Lord. It has brought you to ruin, and you have become among the losers."”
Saheeh International
Essence
One assumption about their Lord, that He knew little of what they did, was enough to throw them down; they woke up among the losers.
A reflection
Thrown down by a thought
Ardākum: it threw you down. The lexicons say the root means throwing. Radā is pelting with stones. Taraddā is to tumble into a well or off a mountain, and an animal killed by such a fall is mutaraddiya. Radā is perishing.
What threw these people down? Not a sword, not a storm. A thought. That assumption you assumed about your Lord, the ayah says, has thrown you down. One commentary names it: the corrupt belief that Allah does not know much of what you do. That belief is what wrecked them.
It is striking to see so much weight laid on one assumption. We tend to think disasters come from great crimes. The ayah says the great crimes come from a small belief, quietly held, never examined.
Picture a walker on a glacier in late spring. Ahead, a smooth white bridge of snow crosses a narrow crevasse. It looks solid; it held the party ahead yesterday. He assumes it will hold him. He steps forward without testing it. The bridge has thinned overnight in the sun. Everything that follows comes from one unexamined assumption.
The people of this ayah built a life on a snow bridge. They assumed that what they did in private was largely unseen. Every step after that seemed safe. They lied, cheated and hid, all resting on the same thin crust.
The lesson is uncomfortable and practical. Look for the assumptions you are standing on, especially about Allah. Not the ones you would say aloud, but the ones your habits reveal. Do you live as though He sees? As though He forgives? As though He cares about the small things? Test the bridge before you trust your whole weight to it.
