Al-Haqqah 69:30

خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ

“[Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Two words are enough: no trial, no appeal, no delay, only a command that is obeyed the instant it is spoken.

A reflection

A command that needs no enforcement

Khudhūhu: seize him. No judge summarises the case first. No officer is dispatched, no warrant drafted, no cell booked. The word itself is the whole apparatus, spoken once, obeyed completely.

Set beside this a thought that should humble anyone who has ever held a grudge, run an organisation or wanted to see a wrong put right. Human justice needs vast machinery to accomplish what this single word does alone: police to find the wrongdoer, courts to hear him, prisons to hold him, and still, so often, a clever lawyer, a bribed official or a border crossed in time lets him slip the net regardless. Here there is no net to slip, because the word and the seizing are the same event.

A hadith reports a warning that belongs exactly here: Allah gives the wrongdoer respite, but when He finally seizes him, He does not let him go. The same root used in this ayah, akhadha, to take hold, names both the long patience beforehand and the total grip at the end. The commentaries picture a great rush of angels competing to be the one who carries out the command, which only sharpens the point: total power stands ready, and chooses, for a long while, not to use it.

That waiting is the part worth sitting with. Everyone who has ever wished harm on someone who wronged them, and watched them seemingly get away with it for years, is watching exactly this respite, not an absence of justice. The ego that builds empires on the assumption that nobody is really watching has mistaken a delay for an acquittal. This ayah is what the delay was never going to end in.
