Al-Haqqah 69:31
ثُمَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ
“Then into Hellfire drive him.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The same fire that once warmed a searching prophet's family is commanded, by the same Lord, to consume this man entirely.
A reflection
One fire, two destinies, one Lord
Ṣallūhu, drive him into it, comes from a root that pictures simple nearness to flame: a stick held to a fire to be straightened, a traveller warming himself at a blaze, a family gathered round a hearth. The same root, read differently, describes being held in the fire and consumed by it. One contact, two outcomes, depending entirely on what stands between the person and the flame.
A prophet once saw a fire in the distance and went toward it hoping to bring back a flame so his family could warm themselves (28:29). Nearness to fire, there, was mercy and guidance arriving together. Here, the same nearness is total consumption. Nothing about the fire itself changed between those two scenes. What changed is who commands it and for whom.
That is worth sitting with before the horror of the image takes over entirely. Fire is not an independent force that happens to burn people Allah dislikes. It is a created thing, utterly obedient, made cool and safe for one prophet cast into it and made total ruin for a man who refused Him. The same power that can suspend what looks like an unbreakable law of nature for the sake of someone He loves can direct that same law in full force against someone who spent a lifetime refusing Him.
Whoever is tempted to imagine judgement as some blind mechanism running on its own, consequences simply unfolding the way weather unfolds, should hear this ayah as a correction. Every flame obeys a command. Nothing here, however it feels, is outside anyone's control.
There is a strange comfort tucked inside that same majesty, easy to miss on a first reading. A fire this obedient to its Maker is also a fire that can be asked to stand down, the way it stood down for the prophet cast bodily into it. Total power used in total severity here is the very same power that can be approached, while there is still time, for total mercy instead.
