Al-Haqqah 69:33
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
“Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The single root failure named for this man is not one bad habit among others but a refusal, held for a lifetime, to believe Allah is truly great.
A reflection
The greatness that shrinks every other one
Al-ʿaẓīm, the Most Great. The root behind it begins in the body: ʿaẓm, bone, the hard frame holding everything else up, named for its sheer strength rather than any display. From there it grew to mean every kind of greatness that has real weight behind it, not size that is merely claimed or performed.
A fair question meets a name like this at once: does Allah calling Himself Great not sound uncomfortably close to pride, the very fault He condemns in people? A hadith answers in Allah's own words: greatness is My lower garment and pride My cloak; whoever contends with Me for either, I cast into the Fire. The answer is not evasive. It states plainly that these two qualities belong to Him alone, as simply and completely as clothing belongs to the person wearing it. Pride in a creature is a lie, claiming a size that was never really there. In Allah it is only ever the truth, because nothing stands above Him to make the claim false.
That is exactly where this man's failure sits. He refused to believe in a greatness that, rightly understood, was never a threat to him at all. Real greatness encountered honestly does not demand that a person grovel. It simply ends the exhausting project of inflating one's own size. A beginner does not strut among champions once he has actually trained beside them; something in him finally rests. The posture of rukūʿ says the same with the whole body: head lowered, back bent, voice saying Allah is Greater until a person's own self-importance quietly resizes itself to what it always was.
This man kept that self-importance fully inflated to the very end, precisely because he never let this one name land on him and do its humbling work.
