Al-Haqqah 69:4
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌۢ بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ
“Thamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity [i.e., the Resurrection].”
Saheeh International
Essence
Thamud and Aad did not simply fail to believe; they built a case against the truth and called it a lie, and the surah now shows where that led.
A reflection
Not unbelief: a campaign
A company's own scientists hand over a report showing a product is unsafe. Leadership does not simply set the report aside. Over the following years they fund friendlier studies, brief journalists, and train staff to call the original findings exaggerated. Decades later the truth of the first report is confirmed in court. What happened was never mere failure to notice. It was sustained, organised work to make a true thing look false.
The verb used here for Thamud and Aad is not the plain "lied", kadhaba, used only eleven times in the whole Quran. It is kadhdhaba, the intensified form, used a hundred and seventy-six times. The difference is not volume; it is direction. The simple form describes a person who lies. The intensive form describes a person who looks at something true and insists, repeatedly, that it is false.
That distinction matters for how this ayah should be read. Thamud and Aad are not accused of innocent doubt, the understandable hesitation of people who were never quite convinced. They are accused of kadhdhabat: an ongoing verdict delivered against the Hour, defended and maintained rather than merely held.
Most people who end up firmly denying something true did not arrive there by one dramatic refusal. They arrived by a long habit of explaining it away, each time a little more practised than the last, until calling it false had become easier than facing what accepting it would cost. This ayah's chosen word names exactly that habit, in two ancient peoples and in anyone since who has built the same quiet case against a truth they would rather not carry.
