أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ
“Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -”
Saheeh International
Essence
ʿĀd once asked who could be stronger than them; the ayah answers with a question: have you not seen how your Lord dealt with them?
A reflection
'Who is stronger than us?'
On the wall of a rugby club's changing room, someone has painted a slogan in the club's colours: Nobody is stronger than us. Every generation of players slaps it on the way out to the pitch. It is meant as encouragement. Said often enough, it becomes a belief.
ʿĀd said something very like it, and the Quran records it. They were arrogant in the land without right, and said: who is stronger than us in power? Then comes the reply. Did they not see that Allah, who created them, was stronger than them in power (41:15)?
Notice how the answer is built. It does not simply say Allah is stronger. It says Allah who created them. The one who makes a thing is always greater than what he makes. ʿĀd's muscles, their stature, their famous strength: all of it was a gift they had been handed. Boasting of it to its Giver is like a child boasting of his height to the parent who fed him.
This ayah picks up their story without retelling it. A-lam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka bi-ʿĀd: have you not seen how your Lord dealt with ʿĀd? It does not even describe the ending. Everyone listening knew it. The destruction of the strongest people of their age is left as a well-known fact.
And it says rabbuka, your Lord. The One who ended ʿĀd is the reader's own Lord, the One who tends and raises him. The same hand that holds you up can set down any power that sets itself against Him.
The ego says: I am strong, and strength is mine. The ayah says: strength is lent, and the Lender is watching how you use it.
Does Allah recount His power to be admired? He is free of all need (35:15). The story is for us, a warning to the proud and steadiness for the believer. The slogan on the wall should be quietly repainted: Allah is stronger than us.
