Essence

The single vein that keeps an entire body alive is named as what would be cut, completing a severe sentence with no gap left anywhere for appeal.

A reflection

The one vessel a body cannot survive losing

Al-watīn, the lexicons explain, is the great vein running from the heart, feeding the body its blood; severed, death follows at once, with no interval and no recovery. It is not one vein among many that a body could compensate for. It is named specifically because nothing about it allows for partial damage or a slow decline.

A note preserved among the commentators adds something careful worth keeping: the point is not necessarily that this exact vessel, by name, would be the one severed. The meaning, on this reading, is that any fabrication would have been met with total, immediate destruction, as complete and as impossible to survive as having this particular vein cut. The image supplies the certainty of the outcome; it need not be read as a clinical description of the precise method.

Either way, the choice of this specific vessel over any other available image was not accidental. Of everything in the body that could possibly have been named, this is the one whose cutting leaves no room for lingering, no chance of recovery, no version of the story where the matter is left even briefly undecided, hanging in suspense a moment longer than it needs to.
