Al-Haqqah 69:49

وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ

“And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah states, plainly and well in advance, exactly what a sceptical audience usually assumes nobody could ever actually see: precisely who among them has already quietly decided not to believe.

A reflection

Knowledge that leaves no private corner unseen

The sentence is doubled for emphasis in Arabic, inna and la stacked together, a construction reserved for statements a speaker wants left beyond any possible doubt: We certainly, definitely know. The thing being known is not a public fact already visible to everyone in the room. It is a private decision, a denial held quietly inside hearts that may well have performed outward agreement for the sake of appearances.

That is a direct confrontation with a particular, quiet arrogance: the comfortable assumption that an inner state, carefully hidden behind an acceptable outward show, is genuinely unseen and unaccountable. A person can manage other people's opinion of them with real skill, saying the right things at the right moments, while privately having settled on an entirely different conclusion. This ayah removes the privacy that arrogance depends on, not gently but with total, doubled certainty.

Most people, honestly, carry at least one such hidden corner: an opinion never spoken aloud, a doubt never confessed, a decision made quietly and never announced. The pride at work here is subtle rather than loud, the quiet comfort of believing that what stays unspoken also stays unknown. This ayah's majesty is aimed precisely at that comfort, not to humiliate but to end an illusion that was never actually true in the first place: nothing hidden behind a performance was ever genuinely hidden from the One this ayah is speaking about.

The humbling and, in time, freeing part of this knowledge is that nothing need be performed for an audience that already sees everything regardless of the performance.
