Al-Haqqah 69:48

وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

“And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder for the righteous.”

Essence

After proving its own authenticity, the Quran states plainly what it is actually for: a reminder, received fully only by those already carrying some shield.

A reflection

Not new information, but a thread tied to the finger

Tadhkira, reminder, grows from a root the first hearers knew through a small, homely habit: tying a thread round a finger so a need would not be forgotten. A tadhkira is the thing that brings back to the heart and tongue what a person already, somewhere, used to know.

That is a striking way for the Quran to describe itself immediately after spending an entire passage proving its own authenticity (69:38-47). Having just established, in detail, that it is not fabricated, it does not then claim to be delivering brand new information unknown to anyone before. It claims instead to be a reminder, something that recalls a truth already available to a reflective heart, rather than installing something wholly foreign to it.

That self-description carries real humility inside it. A new revelation claiming entirely new content would be making a larger and, in one sense, a more arrogant claim about human ignorance beforehand, as if nothing true had ever been accessible to anyone before this exact moment. Calling itself a reminder instead suggests something gentler and, in its own way, more respectful of every honest heart that came before: that the deepest truths it carries were never actually unreachable, only easily buried under distraction and the ordinary business of living, until something ties the thread back round the finger and brings the old, half-forgotten knowledge back to where it can be used again.
