Al-Ma'arij 70:20
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا
“When evil touches him, impatient,”
Saheeh International
Essence
The lightest touch of harm is often enough to make a person unravel completely, long before any real blow has actually landed.
A reflection
A touch, not a blow
The verb chosen here is deliberately light: a touch, a brush of contact, the gentlest word available for something making contact with someone, nothing close to a direct strike or a crushing weight. The Quran does not wait for catastrophe to describe this unravelling. It names the barest possible contact with difficulty as already sufficient to produce it.
That precision matters. A reaction that only appeared after genuinely overwhelming hardship might simply be ordinary human limitation meeting its natural edge, nothing especially notable about it. A reaction this complete triggered by something this slight, a touch rather than a blow, says something sharper about how thin the margin actually is between composure and total unravelling in an untreated, untrained heart.
Most people can recognise this precise gap from their own ordinary days: not the reaction to genuine catastrophe, which is a separate matter entirely, but the disproportionate unravelling triggered by something minor, a delayed reply, a small inconvenience, a minor setback at work, met with a response far larger than the actual trigger ever warranted. This verse names exactly that gap, between the size of the touch and the size of the reaction, as the real subject under examination.
