Al-Ma'arij 70:22

إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ

“Except the observers of prayer -”

Saheeh International

Essence

Except those who pray: two words carving a single way out of everything just said about human nature.

A reflection

The smallest word doing the largest work

After three verses naming a restlessness built into human nature itself, a reader could reasonably expect the surah to simply move on, the diagnosis complete, nothing left to add. Instead it pauses on a single word of exception, except, and that one word reopens the entire portrait just finished, carving an exit out of a description that otherwise applied to everyone without qualification.

An exception clause does particular, careful work in any language: it does not deny what came before it, nor soften its severity, but it insists that the description, however total it sounded, was never actually without limit. Three verses of restless human nature, panic at the first touch of harm, a closing fist at the first touch of ease, a whole pattern that seemed, by the time this word arrives, to describe simply what a human being is, suddenly meets a door standing open in the one wall that looked, a sentence earlier, completely solid.

That door does not appear through some additional, wholly separate mechanism never once mentioned before this point. It appears through a group of people doing one specific, nameable thing, introduced in the next two words. The whole preceding portrait stands exactly as severe as it was; this single word simply insists that severity was never the final word on every single person it described.
