Al-Ma'arij 70:26

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

“And those who believe in the Day of Recompense”

Saheeh International

Essence

Real belief in the Day of Reckoning is not a claim held quietly in the mind but a conviction proven again and again by how a life is lived.

A reflection

A belief that has to keep proving itself

A man is told his cholesterol is dangerously high and insists he fully accepts the test result. The next morning he eats the same fried breakfast he always has. His colleague, given the same news a week earlier, changed her diet by that evening and has kept to it since, without anyone having to remind her twice.

One reading notices something easy to miss in the grammar here. The verb is not in the past tense, as though these people simply affirmed the Day of Recompense once and the matter was settled. It is in the present, ongoing form: they keep affirming it, as something that has to be renewed and shown again through what they actually do, not banked as a belief held once and left alone.

That distinction matters because believing in a coming reckoning is, on paper, something every person of faith already claims. What separates a claim from this verb is whether the claim keeps being proven. The man with the untouched diet has not disbelieved the test result in so many words. He has simply never let that result become anything more than words. His colleague's changed evening meal is the only honest evidence either of them has produced of what they actually hold to be true.

A belief that changes nothing about how today is lived was never affirmed in the sense this ayah describes. It was only ever agreed with.

There is a reason this particular belief resists becoming a settled, one-off claim more than most others do. Almost nothing in daily life confirms or denies it directly; no appointment arrives to check whether a person has kept up the renewal. That silence is precisely what allows a claim to coast for years on the strength of having been agreed to once, decades ago, with nothing since then ever testing whether it still holds any weight in an actual decision.
