Al-Ma'arij · Makki · ayah 28 of 44

Al-Ma'arij 70:28

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ

“Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -”

Saheeh International

Essence

No one, however righteous their list of good qualities, is granted the right to feel entirely safe from their Lord's punishment.

A reflection

Not despair, the same tender fear held firmly

Read in isolation, this line can sound bleak: a flat denial that anyone, however good, is allowed any security at all. Taken that way, it risks tipping people who already try hard into despair, the sense that nothing they do will ever be enough, so trying barely matters.

The ayah does not arrive in isolation, though. It lands directly after a description of believers whose fear was named ishfāq, the tender, caring fear of someone who loves what they might lose, not the flat dread of someone who expects only harm. Read together, the two ayat are not building toward hopelessness. They are correcting a different, quieter danger: the complacency of someone who has done enough good that they have stopped being careful.

Denying blanket security is not the same claim as denying all hope. A pilot who never assumes a flight is routine enough to skip the checklist is not in despair about flying; she is simply refusing a false comfort that would make her careless. This ayah refuses the believer a false comfort in exactly that sense, while the previous one has already shown what kind of fear is meant to fill the space where that comfort used to sit: not terror, but the same watchful, loving attentiveness a mother never quite switches off.

The two ayat are therefore best read as a single instruction rather than two separate moods. One names the feeling that should fill the space; the other removes the one comfort that would otherwise crowd that feeling out. Read apart, the second can sound harsh. Read as the second half of what the first ayah already began, it reads instead as the plain, necessary completion of a single, coherent warning against exactly one failure: not despair, but ease.
