Nuh 71:21
قَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِى وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارًا
“Noah said, "My Lord, indeed they have disobeyed me and followed him whose wealth and children will not increase him except in loss.”

Essence
Nuh finally says the plain, grieving truth: his people followed the men whose wealth and children only ever increased them in ruin.
A reflection
More of something that only makes it worse
The sentence is built as a small, deliberate shock. Zāda, to increase, is one of the most hopeful verbs in the language — more wealth, more children, more of exactly what every culture Nuh's listeners knew counted as success. And then the sentence lands on khasāran, loss, ruin, the word for a trader who has gone home with less capital than he started the day with. Increase, landing on loss. The grammar itself performs the trap these men were in: the more they accumulated, the further they travelled from anything that could actually save them.
This is not a claim that wealth or children are themselves corrupting; the surah itself, a few verses earlier, lists exactly these two things as a promised blessing for anyone who turns back to Allah (71:12). The same resources, in different hands, run in opposite directions. For a grateful heart, provision becomes fuel for more worship, more generosity, more patience with people who have less. For a heart already set on its own importance, the identical provision becomes fuel for more arrogance, more certainty that the applause of one's own success has made correction unnecessary.
A man whose business triples in a decade can become either more generous with his staff and more careful with his word, or more convinced that his growing bank balance proves he already knows better than anyone who questions him. The resources did not decide which; his heart, already leaning one way before the money arrived, decided for him. Wealth and children do not create direction. They amplify whichever direction a person was already quietly travelling in.
Ask honestly which way your own most recent increase — a promotion, a new following, an inheritance — has actually amplified you.
