Al-Mu'minun · Makki · ayah 27 of 118
Al-Mu'minun 23:27
“So We inspired to him, "Construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration, and when Our command comes and the oven overflows,[951] put into it [i.e., the ship] from each [creature] two mates and your family, except him for whom the decree [of destruction] has proceeded. And do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned.”

Essence
Nuh asked for help and was handed a work order: build, watch for the sign, bring in every kind, and stop pleading over what is decided.
A reflection
One word for a world's ending
A riverside town spends three years drafting its plan for the next two decades. There are chapters on housing, parking, schools and shops. Nobody thinks to write a chapter on the river. It has always been there, a pleasant view from the new flats.
The ayah gives the coming flood a single word. Fa-idhā jāʾa amrunā: when Our command comes. One classical theologian notes that amr is a true name for two things at once. It is a command spoken from above, and it is an affair of great weight. Another commentator says the amr here is the punishment itself. He points to Nuh's words to his son: there is no protection today from the amr of Allah (11:43).
Think about what that one word covers. Rain from the sky, water from the ground, a whole people and their way of life swept away. To Allah it is one matter, Our command, arriving when it is due.
Nuh's chiefs had their own plan for time. Wait on him a while, they told the people (23:25). They thought they held the calendar. They would decide when this man was finished. The ayah quietly takes the calendar out of their hands. The waiting would end, but on His word, not theirs.
This is a cure for a particular kind of pride. We speak of our plans as if time belongs to us: next year, after the promotion, once the children are older. None of those sentences is wrong. But each sits inside a larger amr we did not write and cannot schedule.
The humble response is not to stop planning. Nuh planned and built for a long time. It is to hold every plan with an open hand, and to add the words Allah taught: if Allah wills (18:23-24).
Look at your own plan for the next five years, written or unwritten. Find the chapter about the river. It is the one you have not written yet.
