Al-Muddaththir 74:52

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً

“Rather, every person among them desires that he[1797] would be given scriptures spread about.[1798]”

Essence

Each one wants his own personal scroll unfurled from heaven, not more evidence but a signed exemption, asked for by people who deny any unfurling at all.

A reflection

Demanding the unfurling they deny

Nashr names unfolding: a scroll spread open, a flock released to graze freely, dry grass turning green again after rain, and, in the Quran's own repeated usage, the dead raised to life, al-nushūr. The same root that pictures a scroll being spread open before these people's eyes is the root naming resurrection itself.

This makes their demand quietly self-defeating. They ask to be personally handed a munashsharah, an unfurled scroll, while denying outright, as the very next ayah confirms, that they fear or even believe in the Hereafter their own demanded word already echoes. They want the unfolding without the thing it is named after: a scroll unfurled from someone who refuses the resurrection, the ultimate unfurling, that the word itself is built from.

A man insists he will only believe a company's product works once he personally receives a signed, handwritten guarantee from the chief executive, while simultaneously telling anyone who asks that he does not believe the company, or its chief executive, actually exist in any meaningful sense. The demand for proof and the prior rejection of the very frame the proof would come from cannot both be taken seriously at once.

This ayah's irony is built into its own vocabulary: a demand for personal unfurling, voiced by people who have already ruled out the one unfurling that would make the demand mean anything at all.

There is a pattern worth noticing in how often this surah's deniers end up undone by their own chosen words rather than by an outside argument. The man who called the Quran merely human speech met a fire named for the very bashar he dismissed it as. Here, the word chosen for their own demanded proof quietly indicts the very denial the demand was meant to protect.
