Al-An'am 6:124

“And when a sign comes to them, they say, "Never will we believe until we are given like that which was given to the messengers of Allāh." Allāh is most knowing of where [i.e., with whom] He places His message. There will afflict those who committed crimes debasement before Allāh and severe punishment for what they used to conspire.”

Essence

They wanted the message sent to them instead, but Allah knows where it belongs, and pride that grabs at honour lands in smallness.

A reflection

He knows where it belongs

A senior consultant has waited eleven years for the surgical lead. He has the longest list of papers and the oldest office. When the post goes to a colleague fifteen years younger, he tells everyone the panel was dazzled. He never mentions that patients ask for her by name.

The leaders of Makkah made a similar complaint, but about revelation. When a sign came, they said: we will never believe until we are given what Allah's messengers were given. One report has al-Walid ibn al-Mughira putting it plainly. If prophethood were true, he said, I would have more right to it than you. I am older, and I have more wealth.

The ayah does not argue with him. It interrupts: Allāhu aʿlamu ḥaythu yajʿalu risālatah, Allah knows best where He places His message. One early commentator spells out the logic. Choosing the messenger belongs to the one who sends, not to the people he is sent to.

The word ḥaythu is worth a pause. The lexicons call it a word left vague on purpose. It points at a place without naming it, and waits for the sentence after it to say which. Here the 'where' is known to Him and decided by Him.

This is a hard word for the ego. Most of us carry a private list of things we deserve: the role, the recognition, the answered prayer. When it goes elsewhere, we look for a flaw in the decision, rarely in ourselves. The ayah answers every such complaint with the same quiet fact. He knows the place. We do not.

Does Allah need us to approve His choices? He needs nothing. The ayah frees us from a contest we could never win, and from a resentment that would eat us alive.
