Al-Mursalat 77:34

وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

“Woe, that Day, to the deniers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The fifth "woe that Day to the deniers" — here it closes the surah's one continuous scene of the punishment itself, the most detailed stretch this refrain has ever followed.

A reflection

The refrain that follows a scene, not a statement

This exact line was first met at 77:15, and its full treatment lives there. Each return in this surah closes a different case; this is the fifth, and it closes the longest, most sustained one yet.

The earlier returns closed single arguments made in a line or two — history's destroyed deniers, the body's own quiet beginning, three plain blessings in the natural world. This return closes five continuous ayat describing one unbroken scene: the command to walk, the false shade named and then stripped of every quality a shelter needs, fortress-sized sparks, and a herd of them moving in exact, dark colour. Nothing before this point in the surah has asked the listener to sit inside one picture for this long before the refrain finally arrives.

That shift in scale changes what the refrain is doing here. Earlier it closed an argument the mind could follow and weigh. Here it closes an experience the imagination has just been made to inhabit, almost physically, for five ayat running. The same four words land differently after a scene this sustained than they did after a single observation about mountains or water.
