Al-Mursalat 77:42

وَفَوَٰكِهَ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ

“And fruits from whatever they desire,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Not fruit chosen for them, but fruit answering whatever they themselves genuinely want — the first time in this whole long account that desire itself is simply trusted.

A reflection

Fruit that answers the asking, not the season

The commentaries describe this plainly: every kind of fruit, whatever is asked for, found. In this life, fruit is bound to season, to climate, to what a particular soil happens to grow — wanting a specific fruit out of season is simply a wish with nowhere to land. Here the ordinary limits are removed entirely: desire itself becomes the only condition that needs meeting.

That is a genuinely different kind of gift from abundance alone. A buffet offers plenty, but still only what has already been prepared; wanting something not on the table changes nothing. This offers something closer to the opposite: the asking comes first, and the fruit follows it, rather than the other way round. It is provision built around the person receiving it, not provision the person must adapt their wanting to fit.

That distinction matters because it reverses something true of almost every good thing received in this life. Even generous gifts usually require gratitude for what was chosen on your behalf. This is gratitude for being asked first — a small but real difference between being given something good and being given exactly what you actually wanted, with nothing lost in the translation between the two.

There is a quiet dignity in being asked rather than merely provided for. A host who serves whatever they have already decided is generous; a host who asks what you would actually like, and then provides exactly that, is treating the guest as someone whose own preference genuinely matters. This ayah describes the second kind of hosting, extended without limit.
