Al-Mursalat 77:41
إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى ظِلَـٰلٍ وَعُيُونٍ
“Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs”
Saheeh International
Essence
After every false shade this surah has shown, the mindful are finally given the real thing — not one smoke-born shadow but many genuine shades, and springs running beside them.
A reflection
The exact opposite of the smoke, named on purpose
One classical commentary draws the contrast directly: this is unlike what those wretched people are in — the shade of al-yaḥmūm, a foul, black smoke. The surah is not offering a vaguely pleasant image here; it is closing a specific loop opened thirty ayat earlier, when a false shade was named, then stripped of every quality a real shade needs.
Notice the grammar doing quiet work here too. That earlier shade was singular — one false shelter, forking into three columns of the same smoke. This shade is plural, ẓilāl, many genuine shades rather than one counterfeit. Multiplicity itself is part of the reward: not a single grudging shelter but an abundance of the real thing, as if the earlier scarcity of comfort is being answered with deliberate generosity.
Read back to back, the two passages are clearly built as a matched pair. A surah this careful about repeating its refrain with precision was equally careful about which word changed and which stayed the same between the false shade and this true one — same vocabulary, opposite substance, so that a reader who sat with the first scene properly feels the full weight of what has changed by the time this one arrives.
That deliberate pairing is itself a kind of argument. A text that wanted only to frighten would have no reason to build so careful a counterpart; it would simply leave the warning standing on its own. Building the reward as a precise, matched reversal of the punishment suggests the two were always meant to be read together, each one sharpening the other, rather than as two unrelated scenes that happen to sit in the same surah.
