An-Naba 78:13
وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا
“And made [therein] a burning lamp”
Saheeh International
Essence
In the house He built, Allah hung a lamp that blazes with light and heat for everyone, without ceremony and without a bill.
A reflection
The lights that waited for the donor
A new community centre is ready to open. The families are already inside, the children running about in the half-dark. But the lights stay off. The main donor has asked that they be switched on only when he arrives, so that the photographs catch the moment. Forty minutes later his car pulls up, the switch is thrown, and the cameras flash.
Set that beside this ayah. 'And We made a lamp, blazing.' The sources say the lamp is the sun. One explains that it shines over the whole world, its glow reaching all the people of the earth. Another notes that calling it a lamp follows naturally from calling the heavens a building. Every built house has a lamp hung in it, and this house has one too.
Notice what the sun does not do. It does not wait for its donor to arrive. It does not rise more brightly for those who thank it. It gives its light and heat to believer and denier, grateful and ungrateful, each morning, with no ribbon and no speech. The One who hung it there never asks for the photograph.
The ego works the other way. We give a little light and want it noticed. We time our generosity for the camera. We switch on our kindness when the right people are watching and let the room wait in the dark until then.
Is it vanity for Allah to point to the sun and say 'We made it'? The sources read these ayat as evidence and favour, not a bid for praise. He is free of need. The mention is for us: to see what giving looks like when the Giver needs nothing back.
The donor did give real money, and the centre is real. But imagine if he had let the lights come on without him. The families would never have known whom to thank. And perhaps that would have been the best gift of all.
