An-Naba 78:12

وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا

“And constructed above you seven strong [heavens]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Over your head stands a sevenfold building, pitched like a tent and tied fast like a knot, that time has never worn.

A reflection

The roof that never needs rethatching

A master thatcher climbs down from a cottage roof in late summer. It has taken him six weeks. The reed is combed tight, the ridge is patterned, and the whole village has stopped to admire it. He is rightly proud. He also knows, better than anyone, that in thirty years someone will have to strip it and start again.

'And We built above you seven, strong.' The sources explain the last word, shidād, as firm and finely made. The heavens are strong in their making, and the passage of time has no effect on them. One says they have no cracks and no rifts. Another points out that elsewhere the sky is called a roof, yet here Allah says He built it. A building, he notes, stands further from decay than a roof. So this ceiling has the endurance of a building.

Here is a quiet lesson for our pride. Our finest roofs are admired for a generation and then repaired. Our tallest towers need inspections, maintenance crews and insurance. We are proud of things that begin to wear out the day they are finished. Meanwhile, over every head on earth stands a structure no one has ever had to patch.

The thatcher's pride is not wrong. Good work deserves satisfaction. But it looks different when he lifts his eyes. His six weeks of labour sit under a roof that was built without effort and has needed no repair since.

Does Allah point to the heavens because He wants praise? The sources read this whole passage as evidence and as favour. He is free of any need for our admiration. The reminder is for us. It keeps our achievements at their true size and points us to the One who can build and rebuild whatever He wills, including us.

Next time you are proud of something you made, look up for a moment. Enjoy your work, and then remember whose roof it stands under.
