“And he showed him the greatest sign,[1842]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Musa showed Pharaoh the greatest sign, a shepherd's staff made alive, and the most powerful man on earth saw it and knew.

A reflection

Three hundred artists and two years

At the end of a big fantasy film, the credits roll for eleven minutes. In one famous scene a wizard's staff turns into a serpent. Behind those few seconds are three hundred visual-effects artists, two years of work and banks of computers. It is a marvel of human skill. And when the lights come up, everyone knows it was never real.

In this ayah, a man with a shepherd's staff stands in the court of the most powerful ruler on earth. The sources say the greatest sign was that staff becoming a living serpent, or that together with his hand shining white. There were no artists, no machines, no illusion. A dead piece of wood became a living thing, and then became wood again.

One classical scholar lists what was contained in that single sign. Life given to lifeless matter. The body growing vast. Tremendous strength. Swallowing what was thrown before it. Then all of it withdrawn, and the plain staff back in Musa's hand. Each of those, he says, was a miracle in itself.

And the sign was not Musa's. The sources point out that elsewhere the Quran says 'We showed him Our signs' (20:56). Musa held the staff. Allah made it live.

This is where human pride meets its limit. Our greatest wonders are skilled imitations of what He does without effort. The finest effects studio in the world can only make it look as if a stick lives. The One who made the tree the staff came from can give it life.

A doubt may come. Is this a display of power to overawe people? The sources answer that the sign was proof for Pharaoh's sake. One calls it clear evidence of the truth of what Musa brought from Allah. Allah needed no one's belief. He is 'free of need of the worlds' (29:6). The sign was a door held open for a proud man.

Next time you are dazzled by human cleverness, enjoy it. Then remember whose staff it is.
