Essence
The Quran is honoured by the One who spoke it, not by its readers; we are honoured by carrying it.
A reflection
The honour flows from the Author
The surah has just told the Prophet ﷺ not to chase a man who thought himself self-sufficient. Now it explains why that man was never needed. The reminder he brushed aside is 'in honoured pages'.
Honoured by whom? The commentators give several answers, and one is especially striking. The pages are honoured because they came from the Most Generous, al-Karīm. The honour of a book, it says, comes from the honour of its author. Others add that they are honoured with Allah, or honoured for the knowledge and wisdom they hold, or because noble angels carried them down.
Every answer points the same way. The honour does not rise from below. It does not depend on who reads the Quran, who praises it, or which powerful man accepts it. It flows down from the One who spoke it.
That quietly dismantles a very human instinct. We tend to measure worth by endorsement. A book matters if important people quote it. A cause matters if famous people back it. A person matters if the right people know their name. The self-sufficient man of Quraysh was operating on exactly that logic. He assumed the message needed him more than he needed it.
Picture a young cellist invited to play an instrument made by a master craftsman three centuries ago. She does not make the cello valuable. It makes her playing sound better than it ever has. She tunes it with a kind of reverence, and handles it as if it might break. Every note is a privilege. It would be absurd for her to feel that the cello was lucky to have her.
That is our position before the Quran. We are not doing it a favour by reading it. It is doing us an honour by letting us carry it. Pride here would be a strange kind of blindness.
Someone may ask: is it not vain for Allah to praise His own Book? Praise is vanity only when the one praised needs it, or when the praise is false. Allah needs nothing, and every word is true. When He tells us the pages are honoured, He is not seeking our applause. He is telling us what we are holding, so that we hold it properly.
