At-Takwir 81:10

وَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ

“And when the pages[1868] are spread [i.e., made public]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The pages you dictate every day are folded at death and spread open on that Day; the author reading them will be you.

A reflection

You are dictating

An early commentator explained this ayah in one sentence. 'Your page, son of Adam, is dictated, then folded, then spread out against you on the Day of Resurrection. So let a man look at what he dictates into his page.'

The verb he chose matters: tumlā, dictated. The angels write, but the words come from you. Every day you are speaking your own book aloud, sentence by sentence, and it is being taken down exactly.

Another early voice described the whole life of a record as 'two spreadings and a folding'. While you live, your page lies open, so dictate in it what you wish. When you die, it is folded. When you are raised, it is spread open again. Then you are told, 'Read your book; today you are enough as a reckoner against yourself' (17:14).

The word nushirat carries more than unrolling. Its root names cloth or a scroll opened out, the opposite of folding. It names sheep let out of their pen at dawn to scatter and graze. It names dry grass turning green after a late rain. And it names the dead rising: nushūr. The same Day that unfolds the pages unfolds the people who wrote them.

Picture investigators after an air accident, gathered round a table as the flight recorder is played. Nobody in the cockpit was thinking about the recorder. They were talking, deciding, joking, worrying. Every word is there, in their own voices.

This is not meant as a threat hanging over every sentence. It is meant as authorship. You are not a character in someone else's record. You are dictating your own. The page is still open today. Nothing is folded yet. The next line is yours to speak.
