'Abasa 80:19
مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ
“From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;[1859]”
Saheeh International
Essence
From a little water at the bottom of the bucket, He made a person and measured every part of him; no talent is self-made.
A reflection
The design you did not draw
The previous ayah asked a question: from what did He create him? This one answers it, and then adds a word that changes everything. From a drop He created him, fa-qaddarahu: and then He measured him out.
The commentators fill that word with detail. He measured his hands, his feet, his eyes and every limb. He set whether he would be tall or short, fair or plain. One explanation says He fixed his lifespan, his provision and his deeds. Another says qaddarahu means He prepared him for what suits him, fitting each part to its work. One commentator points to a matching ayah: 'He created everything, and measured it out precisely' (25:2).
Here is where pride has nowhere to stand. Almost everything we are proud of lies inside that word. The quick mind, the good eye, the strong back, the steady hands, the talent for numbers or for words. None of it was designed by us. We did not choose the length of our fingers or the speed of our thoughts. We woke up already measured.
Picture a young concert pianist after a triumphant recital. The critics praise her 'gift'. She knows how many hours she practised, and she is right to. But one evening, looking at her own hands on the keys, she realises something. The span that lets her reach a tenth, the ear that hears a note slightly flat: she never ordered them. They were measured for her before she drew breath. Her hours of practice were real, and they were built on a design she did not draw.
A sceptic might say: why does Allah keep pointing to His own power, as if He needed us to admire Him? But He needs nothing from us (35:15). The pointing is for our sake. A person who knows their gifts were measured out for them can use them freely, without the anxiety of having to prove they made them.
That is the real humility this ayah teaches. Not 'I have nothing', which is false. But 'everything I have was measured out for me', which is true, and which turns pride into gratitude.
