'Abasa 80:27
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا
“And caused to grow within it grain”
Saheeh International
Essence
A handful of grain feeds the world because Allah makes it grow, and the same small word for seed names the core of the heart.
A reflection
The bread of every table
After the pouring and the splitting comes the first thing named: ḥabb, grain. The commentators explain it as all that is harvested and stored: wheat, barley and every grain that people live on.
It is fitting that grain comes first. Bread, rice, porridge and flatbread feed most of humanity, in palaces and in refugee camps. Across every culture and every century, human beings have depended on a few kinds of small, dry seeds.
And the ayah says who makes them grow. Not 'grain grew', but fa-anbatnā: 'and We caused to grow'. The little fa, 'and so', ties it tightly to what came before. The water was poured, the earth was split, and so, at once, the grain came up.
Picture a combine harvester working a wheat field late into an August night, its lights sweeping the stubble. In the cab, the driver glances back at the grain pouring into the trailer: tonnes of it, gold in the headlights. In spring he drilled a few sacks of seed into this field. Now the trailer overflows, and there are two more loads to come. He did the driving. He did not do the multiplying.
That is where the ego falls quiet. The richest person in the world eats bread made from grain they could not cause to grow. The most brilliant scientist lives on seeds whose life they cannot create. Every table on earth depends on a growth that no human commands.
A person may ask why Allah names Himself as the grower, as if He were claiming credit. He does not need credit. He names Himself so that we know whom to thank. And so that we do not mistake our share of the work for the whole of it.
When you next tear a piece of bread, pause over it. It is a field, a harvest and a multiplication, placed in your hand by the One who said: We caused it to grow.
