Nuh 71:17

وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًا

“And Allāh has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah did not simply place you on the earth; He grew you out of it, the way a plant breaks through soil nobody saw move.

A reflection

Grown, not merely made

Nuh's wording here is unusually precise. The verb is anbata, to cause to sprout, the exact word used for a seed breaking through soil. The grammarians noticed something else too: the expected verbal noun of anbata would be inbātan, but the ayah instead uses nabātan — the ordinary noun for 'plant' or 'growth' itself, standing in where the abstract verbal noun should be. One classical grammarian explained this is deliberate: it makes the sentence read almost as 'He grew you, and you grew, as plants grow' — doubling the image rather than stating it once and moving on.

The commentators link this directly to Adam's own creation from clay and dust, with every later human descending from that first earthly material. But the word Nuh reaches for is not simply 'formed from clay' — it is specifically grown, the vocabulary of planting, roots and seasons, not the vocabulary of pottery or sculpture.

The same root appears again, strikingly, for a human life rather than humanity's origin: Maryam is said to have been 'raised up in a goodly manner' using this very word (3:37), her growth likened to a plant tended with special care. The Quran is not shy about returning to this image for an individual's unfolding life, not only for the species' first ancestor.

A sculptor finishes a statue the moment the chisel stops; nothing more will happen to it afterward. A gardener plants a seed and then the real work begins somewhere unseen, underground, on a timetable the gardener does not control. Nuh's people are being told, gently but precisely, which kind of thing they actually are.
