“And olive and palm trees”

Saheeh International

Essence

Two patient trees, the olive and the palm, give food, oil, light and sweetness at every stage; their Maker asks only that we notice.

A reflection

Two trees that never stop giving

Among all the plants Allah could name, He names two trees here: the olive and the date palm. One commentator lists what each gives, and the lists are long.

The olive is food. Its oil is a relish in its own right. It is used to light lamps, and to anoint the body. The palm is eaten at every stage of its fruit: unripe, half-ripe, fresh and moist, and finally dried. It is eaten raw and cooked. Syrup and vinegar are pressed from it.

Picture a grandmother's kitchen in a village, early morning. Olive oil goes into the pan for the eggs. More is drizzled on the bread. She rubs a little into her grandson's chapped hands. Before dawn she lit a small oil lamp to pray by, because the electricity cuts out most nights. On the table sits a bowl of dates from the palm in the courtyard, and a jar of date syrup for the children's porridge. Two trees are feeding, healing and lighting one household before the sun is up.

That is the quiet power the ayah points to. These are not flashy gifts. They are patient trees that stand for generations, giving the same abundance year after year without being asked.

And the ayah credits them to one Source: 'We caused to grow'. The olive and the palm did not design themselves. Their many uses were built into them by the One who knew every household that would depend on them.

The ego likes to believe that value is something we add. We invent, we improve, we market. This ayah sets two trees beside our cleverness. They have given the human race more than most of our inventions. It asks who made them.

Someone may ask why Allah lists such things, as if seeking praise for them. He does not need our praise. The listing is for our eyes, which grow blind to what is always there. It teaches us to see a date or a drop of oil as a gift with a Giver.
