'Abasa 80:30

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا

“And gardens of dense shrubbery”

Saheeh International

Essence

Beyond the food we need, Allah gives walled gardens thick with great trees: shade, beauty and strength that no human hand could raise.

A reflection

More than we needed

The list so far has been practical: grain, grapes, fodder, olives, dates. Now it adds something more: ḥadāʾiq ghulb, gardens thick with great trees.

The commentators give ghulb several shades. Trees that are thick and strong. Trees intertwined and pressed close together. Trees that are tall. Trees that give shade. Noble palms with great trunks. And the Quran uses one word that holds them all.

What is striking is that gardens go beyond survival. Human beings can live on bread and dates. But Allah also gives shade, greenness, the sound of leaves and the pleasure of walking under great trees. It is generosity beyond necessity.

Picture a family on a train in late spring, crossing a valley of orchards in full blossom. The children have been squabbling for an hour over a tablet. Then the train comes out of a cutting, and on both sides there are trees white and pink as far as they can see. For a whole minute nobody speaks. The youngest presses her face to the window. No one had to explain anything to them. They simply saw more beauty than they had asked for.

The Quran speaks elsewhere of the same gardens. 'He caused to grow gardens of delight, whose trees it was not for you to grow' (27:60). The word there is the same, ḥadāʾiq. And the point is the same. You can plant a sapling. You cannot command a forest to rise.

That is where the ego finds its proper size. We landscape our gardens and trim our hedges and feel we have created something. But the great trees that shade our cities were raised over lifetimes. Their Lord did not need to make the world beautiful, and He did.

A person may ask why Allah draws attention to this, as though He needed thanks for beauty. He needs nothing. The reminder is for us, so that we do not walk through a world full of gifts without once looking up.
