Al-'Alaq 96:15

كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ

“No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock[1952] –”

Saheeh International

Essence

The man who wanted to stop a prayer is told to stop, and warned that the front of his proud head is already within reach.

A reflection

Where pride sits, and who already holds it

On the morning of a job interview, a young man spends forty minutes on his hair and ten on the company's annual report. He checks the front of it in the lift mirror, then in the glass door, then in his phone camera in reception. Of everything about him, that is the part he wants to be right.

The nāṣiya is the forelock: the hair at the front of the head, and the place where it grows. The lexicons say the root speaks of height and choice; the forelock is named for how high it sits. When two fighters grappled, each seized the other's forelock. To hold someone's forelock was to master him. A classical commentator adds that when the Arabs wanted to humble a man, this is exactly where they took hold of him.

Another commentator wonders why the forelock is named here. Perhaps, he suggests, this man took particular care combing and perfuming his own. The proudest feature is the one singled out.

Now hear the reversal. He had sworn to push a praying face into the dust (96:9). It is his own raised head that the ayah takes hold of.

Each of us has a front we keep combed: a title, a name in the community, a carefully kept image. The ayah quietly points out that the place we lift highest is also the easiest place to be gripped.

In truth it is already held. 'There is no creature but He holds its forelock. My Lord is on a straight path' (11:56). Every forelock on earth is in His hand, and He holds it only with justice.

Is this God boasting of His force? Pride is a lie when a creature grabs at others to feel big. Allah needs no one's humiliation to be great. Here His power is used for one purpose: to stand between a bully and a man on his knees in prayer.
