Al-'Alaq 96:14

أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ

“Does he not know that Allāh sees?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The surah's hinge is one plain question: does he not know that Allah sees, the bully at the door and the servant on the floor?

A reflection

He sees, and He looks past the surface

A man back from Umrah spends forty minutes choosing which photo to post. He crops out the crowd so that he appears alone before the Kaʿba, head bowed. The caption is one word: 'Grateful.' Then he checks, every few minutes, how many people have seen it.

Yarā: He sees. The verb has no object. Not 'sees him', not 'sees this'. Simply: He sees. Nothing is excluded.

The root of yarā reaches past the surface. What the eye takes in of someone's looks is riʾy. A mirror is mirʾāt. When people strain together to catch the new crescent, the word is tarāʾaynā: we looked out for it together. And the same root gives riyāʾ: doing a deed so that others will see it. One lexicon defines it sharply: to show a man that you are other than you are.

Riyāʾ is the ego's oldest craft. It edits, angles and crops until the picture flatters. And it is never finished, because the people it performs for keep scrolling on.

This ayah names the only viewer who matters. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah does not look at your forms or your wealth. He looks at your hearts and your deeds (Sahih Muslim). He sees the crop and the crowd it removed. He sees the forty minutes, and the moment of real gratitude that may also have been there.

Is it arrogant for Allah to insist that He sees? Arrogance is a creature claiming a size it does not have. For Allah, seeing everything is simply the truth, and He gains nothing from our being seen by Him. The gain is all ours. Once you know He sees, performing for others starts to look pointless. And the quiet despair of being overlooked loses its grip. The One whose seeing matters has never looked away.
