Yusuf 12:59

“And when he had furnished them with their supplies, he said, "Bring me a brother of yours from your father.[603] Do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of accommodators?”

Essence

He packs his brothers' saddlebags in full before he asks for anything, and then asks for his own brother in the words of a stranger.

A reflection

The gift came first, and the request after

It is easy to read this ayah as a power move. A ruler holds the grain, and uses it to extract what he wants: bring me your brother.

Read the order of the sentence again.

When he had equipped them with their supplies, then he said. The loading is finished before the request is spoken. The grain is not held back as a hostage. It is already tied onto their camels.

One commentary notes that he did not say what follows as a reminder of his favour. He said it to urge them. The full measure was not a bargaining chip; it was evidence.

That is a different thing altogether. A bargain says: do this and you will get that. A gift followed by a request says: you have already received; now here is something I would like.

A retired headmaster tutored his neighbour's daughter through a year of exams, every Saturday, without charge. After her results came, he knocked once and asked a small favour. His wife was in hospital and lonely. Would the family visit her?

Nobody in that house could have refused him. Not because he had bought them. Because he had already shown who he was.

The brothers will soon be told something harder, in the next ayah. Without the youngest, there will be no measure next time. But that warning comes after a full gift, not instead of one.

The ayah lets us watch a man who has every reason to withhold, and who gives first anyway.

The saddlebags are already roped and loaded when he opens his mouth.
