Yusuf 12:60

فَإِن لَّمْ تَأْتُونِى بِهِۦ فَلَا كَيْلَ لَكُمْ عِندِى وَلَا تَقْرَبُونِ

“But if you do not bring him to me, no measure will there be [hereafter] for you from me, nor will you approach me."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The warning sounds like a door slammed shut, but every word of it is built to bring the whole family back through that door.

A reflection

A threat whose whole aim was their return

Read on its own, this ayah sounds harsh. No brother, no grain. And do not come near me. A ruler drawing a line in the sand.

Most readers carry it that way: Yusuf finally showing some steel, perhaps even a little of the anger he had every right to feel.

But look at what he actually wants.

He has just loaded their camels in full and told them he is the best of hosts. Now he says that without the youngest, they will get no measure. Everything in the sentence points one way: come back, and bring him.

One classical commentary reads the last phrase carefully. Do not come near me does not mean stay away for ever, because he was urging them to return. It means: you will not have the standing of those who are close to me.

So the threat is not about distance. It is about nearness, and how to reach it.

A grandmother tells her two sons, who have not spoken in four years, that the family's summer week by the sea is cancelled. Not postponed. Cancelled, unless both of them come, with their children.

It sounds like punishment. Her granddaughter, older now, understood it later. It was the only lever she had left, and she pulled it towards the table, not away from it.

That is the shape of this ayah. A condition that sounds like exclusion, whose only purpose is to gather.

And the people it is aimed at are the very men who once made a brother disappear. Now the price of grain is to make a brother appear.

The brothers are being asked, without knowing it, to reverse the well.
