Ar-Ra'd 13:29
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ طُوبَىٰ لَهُمْ وَحُسْنُ مَـَٔابٍ
“Those who have believed and done righteous deeds - a good state is theirs and a good return.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Joy now and a good homecoming later are promised to those whose belief already proved itself in what they did.
A reflection
Is a reward a bribe for belief?
A fair question meets this ayah before any other. If goodness is paid for, does that make belief a transaction rather than devotion offered for its own sake?
Look at the order of the sentence first. It does not say: believe, and I will pay you. It describes people who have already believed and already done what is right, and only then names what is theirs. The reward is not a price dangled to start a change of heart. It is the shape of what follows a heart that already turned.
Several early authorities read ṭūbā lahum simply as joy, a coolness of the eye. Another calls it plain Arabic idiom, the ordinary way one person tells another, you have found good. Nothing in the wording asks to be bargained with. It is closer to a verdict passed on a life already lived than an offer placed before one.
Think of someone who starts mentoring younger founders only after his own business has failed and he needed that company himself. A cynic on the sidelines says he only does it to feel useful again, to repay a debt he cannot otherwise settle. Both things can be true at once. He needed the company, and the mentoring he now gives is still real: hours kept, calls returned, nobody charged.
What would actually cheapen a good deed is not hoping for Allah's reward. It is doing the deed to be seen and praised by people, which the Quran names and condemns elsewhere in its own right. Hoping that the One who sees everything will not let a good deed go unmet is not a bribe taken. It is trust placed in a Judge who already knows the heart behind the hand.
So the believer is not told: act well, for a fee awaits. He is shown people who already acted well, and told what is already theirs. The order itself answers the doubt.
