Ar-Ra'd 13:31

“And if there was any Qur’ān [i.e., recitation] by which the mountains would be removed or the earth would be broken apart or the dead would be made to speak,[640] [it would be this Qur’ān], but to Allāh belongs the affair entirely. Then have those who believed not accepted that had Allāh willed, He would have guided the people, all of them? And those who disbelieve do not cease to be struck, for what they have done, by calamity - or it will descend near their home - until there comes the promise of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh does not fail in [His] promise.”

Essence

Even mountains moved and the dead made to speak would change nothing, because every outcome, large or small, already belongs to Allah alone.

A reflection

Not even your best argument was ever yours to win with

The ayah offers the deniers the most extreme hypothetical it can construct. A recitation that moved mountains from their place, split the earth open, made the dead speak in their graves. Then it drops the whole hypothetical with four words: bal li-llāhi al-amru jamīʿan, no, the command belongs to Allah, all of it.

Not some of it. Not the weather and the stars, while human persuasion keeps a small corner for itself. All of it, including whether a single heart in front of you turns.

A strategist spends a career building the most watertight case of her life. Every statistic is checked, every objection pre-empted, every slide tested on a hostile audience first. She delivers it to the one board that can fund her project, flawlessly, and they still say no. For years she had quietly believed that a good enough argument always wins eventually. That day she learns otherwise.

This ayah names exactly what she learns. The best possible case, even one dressed in literal miracles, was never a lever anyone held. The ego that builds a case likes to believe the result is its own doing, earned by its own skill. This ayah removes that belief at the root. Even the Quran's own miraculous reach over mountains and the dead would not force a single disbeliever into belief. Belief was never a thing a performance could extract.

Someone might ask whether this makes Allah's claim boastful, an assertion that needs believers to hear it to be true. It does not. The sentence relieves rather than demands. Nobody who has built their best case and still lost the room needs to carry the loss as personal failure. The command never left His hand to begin with. It was never fully in anyone else's hand either, however persuasive they sounded that day.
