Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 66 of 111
Al-Isra 17:66
“It is your Lord who drives the ship for you through the sea that you may seek of His bounty. Indeed, He is ever, to you, Merciful.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The ship that carries your trade is driven along by your Lord, gently, because He has always been merciful to you.
A reflection
Who is driving the ship?
At three in the morning, a third officer stands the night watch on a car carrier in the Bay of Biscay. Thousands of cars are lashed down below her. The bridge glows with screens: radar, autopilot, engine readings. She has a mug of tea. It feels, quietly, as though she is driving the whole thing.
The ayah begins with a correction she might smile at. Rabbukumu lladhī yuzjī lakumu l-fulka fī l-baḥr: your Lord is the One who drives the ship along for you on the sea. One commentator explains izjāʾ as driving a thing along, stage after stage. He adds that it was chosen over a plainer word for 'make it sail' because it suggests pushing from outside the ship. The drive belongs to another.
He also names the means. Allah drives ships 'by the gentle wind, and by the instruments, according to His custom'. The engines are not a rival to the ayah. They are inside it. Every law that lets steel float, every wind and current, every spark in the engine room runs because He keeps it running.
That is a gentle blow to human pride. We are good at building ships, and we are tempted to think that building the engine means owning the voyage. The ego takes credit that belongs to the Lord of the sea.
Someone may ask why the Quran keeps listing His favours. Is He fishing for thanks? He is the Free of need (35:15), and the favour is stated, not invoiced. Notice how this ayah ends: not with a demand, but with a fact about Him. 'He is ever merciful to you.' A giver who points to what is in your hands is not asking to be paid. He is asking you to see.
The officer finishes her tea and checks the radar. Nothing is wrong with her pride in her work. It simply belongs one step lower on the bridge.
