Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 65 of 111

Al-Isra 17:65

إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ وَكِيلًا

“Indeed, over My [believing] servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.[761]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The devil has no hand strong enough to force Allah's servants; their Lord is enough to guard them, and they need no other.

A reflection

Enough is your Lord, not your willpower

At a family dinner, a woman in her fifties is asked how she has never missed a prayer since she was nine. 'Discipline,' she says. 'You either have it or you don't.' Across the table her younger cousin, who has missed many, looks down at his plate.

Read the end of this ayah with her answer in your ear. Wa-kafā bi-rabbika wakīlā: and your Lord is enough as a guardian. The passage has just let the devil do his worst. Rouse whom you can with your voice, it said, and charge at them with your cavalry and your foot (17:64). Then comes the limit. Inna ʿibādī laysa laka ʿalayhim sulṭān: over My servants you have no authority.

One classical commentator noticed what the ayah does not say. If keeping clear of the devil came from a person's own strength, it would say: the man is enough as a guardian for himself. It says instead: enough is your Lord. He drew a conclusion that scholars repeated for centuries. There is no turning from disobedience except by Allah's protection, and no strength for obedience except by His help.

That is hard news for the ego. Our proudest virtues feel like our own achievement. The ayah quietly moves the credit. Her unbroken prayers were real, and so was her effort. But the wall that kept the raiders out was His.

Someone may ask why Allah speaks of 'My servants' at all. Does He need servants, the way a lord needs men to fight for him? He answers elsewhere: 'I want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me' (51:57). The possession here is honour, not need. One commentator notes that 'My' is added to dignify them. He does the guarding. They are the ones kept.

The cousin at the table needed to hear that. Not 'you lack discipline', but: ask the Guardian. He is enough, for both of you.
