Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 87 of 111
Al-Isra 17:87
إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّن رَّبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّ فَضْلَهُۥ كَانَ عَلَيْكَ كَبِيرًا
“Except [We have left it with you] as a mercy from your Lord. Indeed, His favor upon you has ever been great.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The threat to take the revelation is cut off mid-sentence by mercy: it stays, because His favour upon the Prophet ﷺ has always been great.
A reflection
Earned, and still given
A seventeen-year-old opens her results online and sees she has come top of her year. She rings her grandmother first. The old woman listens, then says only: alhamdulillah, it was given to you. The girl is stung. She did the past papers. She gave up the summer. Given?
Both of them are right, and this ayah shows how.
The Prophet ﷺ is the most tested and most tireless person the Qur'an addresses. Yet the ayah does not praise his effort here. It names Allah's: His favour upon you has been great. The commentaries list what that favour holds. He chose you for His message and sent His Book down to you. He made you master of the children of Adam, sealed the prophets with you, and gave you the praised station. And now, in this passage, He has kept the revelation with you.
Effort is real, and the Qur'an honours it everywhere. But effort is not the whole account. The girl's mind, her health on exam days, the teacher who explained the hard topic, the quiet house: none of those were her doing. Pride takes the credit for the part it can see. Humility remembers the parts it cannot.
There is an objection worth meeting. Why would Allah remind anyone of His favour? Does He want gratitude for His own sake? The Qur'an answers directly: whoever is grateful is grateful for his own good (31:12). He is free of all need. Naming the favour is for the one who receives it. A gift you think you earned cannot gladden you in the same way. It can only make you anxious to keep earning.
So when the grandmother says 'it was given', she is not taking anything from her granddaughter. She is handing her a second gift: freedom from carrying it all herself.
